Wagner Furno 500 Heat Gun Review

The Wagner Furno 500 is an excellent heat gun at a reasonable price.

A heat gun is a must have tool for many automotive enthusiasts. From loosening adhesives to heat shrinking electrical wiring, the heat gun has many uses.

The Important Features of a Heat Gun

The feature list is pretty simple, but there are a couple of features that seperate a good heat gun from a really cheap one. The cheapest heat guns generally offer two temperature settings: really hot and melt whatever is in front of it. Many of them also offer only one fan setting: full send. These simple devices can usually be found in the $20-$30 range.

For around $50, however, these issues are solved. A better heat gun will have 12 or more heat settings, allowing you to dial in more specific temperatures. More importantly, it allows you to actually use the heat gun in situations where you need low heat.

The Wagner Furno 500

Wagner, a brand well known for its paint sprayers, has a line of Furno heat guns. Their two temperature cheap entry is the Furno 300 which is around $27 at Home Depot. The one I chose is the step up Furno 500 which was $49 at Home Depot when I purchased it.

The Furno 500 offers 12 temperature settings ranging from 150 Fahrenheit to 1200 Fahrenheit. It has two fan speeds, an integrated stand so you can sit it down without burning anything, and a helpful cool down feature that cools the gun after you turn it off so you can more quickly store it away.

If you use DeWalt tools, this will fit right in!

I like the feel of the Furno 500. It’s light enough to use easily but feels heavy like a quality tool. I used it for a prolonged period of time trying to remove some very stubborn chrome accents from my truck and no part of the heat gun other than the tip got hot.

The integrated stand isn’t my favorite feature, but at least Wagner did provide a way to sit the gun down with it still on without just throwing it on the ground and risking pulling debris into the air intakes on the sides.

The integrated stand works well. Just be careful how you work around it when it’s blowing straight up into the air.

Should You Buy the Wagner Furno 500?

For me, it’s the perfect heat gun. I’d like to save $20 of course, but a heat gun with only two temperature settings seems very limiting. 12 settings ranging from 150 degrees to 1200 degrees seems like plenty of variability for things I might encounter in my garage.

There is a Furno 700. It’s temperature range is basically the same as the 500, but rather than 12 temperature settings, you can set specific temperatures. A great feature if you have very specific needs, but not worth the $75 price tag for me.

I often gravitate to the middle tool in a range as the best combination of quality and price. The Furno 500 struck that balance for me. I’m very happy with my purchase. I found the best price at Home Depot, but as always, you should shop around.
